Layer
List
Located in
the left panel, the layer list is an interactive map display manipulator
that allows you to change the feature layers drawn on the map.
Available
Feature Layers
The layer list is a dynamic list
that will increase and decrease in size based upon the scale of the map.
Many features are unavailable until you zoom to a larger scale (smaller
area). Layers are visible by default, except for the aerial image
layer. The list of available feature layers includes:

Making Feature Layers Visible
Each feature layer in the layer
list has a check box to the right of the feature layer name. If the box
is checked, it means the layer is visible on the map. You can check
or un-check the box by clicking on it. You will not see changes to
the map display until you click the
button. Though this application
has functionality in other Arc/IMS sites, its utility is negligible here.
Aerial Images
When you zoom in close enough, you
can display the aerial photography for the map area.
Legend
If
you are unsure as to how particular features appear on the map, you can
use the
tool to change the Layer List to a Legend. All of the interactive
capabilities will be removed in the legend, it is simply used for reference
(right). To bring the panel back to the Layer List, click the Layers tool
again.
